New flexible microprocessor made of ultra-thin two-dimensional material molybdenum disulfide

Flexible electronics can benefit from ultra-thin materials of atomic thickness, which are used for manufacturing microprocessors. Recent breakthroughs have been made in this area by researchers at the Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, and the EU's flagship graphene project. These breakthroughs are expected promote the development of Internet of Things applications and intelligent hardware.
"Two-dimensional Material" is a term used to describe a material which can be moved freely (planar movement) in only two dimensions on a non-nanoscale (between 1 and 100 nm), for example graphene or transition metal compounds, such as tungsten dielenide, molybdenum sulfide.
The two-dimensional materials are usually composed of several layers of molecules. Our previous focus was on graphene. In addition to graphene-like materials, transition metal disulfide compound is also a two-dimensional material. The materials are soft, small, light, and of low weight. But they also have excellent semiconductor properties, making them ideal for flexible electronic gadgets. .
Microprocessors form the basis of modern electronics. Microprocessors play a key role in all electronics products.

A microprocessor, which is a core part of the microcomputer, consists of large integrated circuits that can read and process instructions. They also exchange data with external logic and memory components.

Thomas Mueller of Vienna's Technical University has been studying two-dimensional material. He believes that materials with two dimensions are the best candidates for manufacturing microprocessors in the future. Molybdenum diulfide, composed of sulfur and molybdenum, is only three atoms thick, making it a two dimensional material.

In order to achieve this, he worked with the research team of Technical University of Vienna as well the researchers of EU Graphene Flagship Project in creating a transistor using the two-dimensional "molybdenum sulfide" MoS2. A new type of microprocessor is formed by 115 of these transistors. Currently, this type of microprocessor performs one-bit logical operations. It is expected that it will expand in the near future to multi-bit based logic.
