What's 316? Stainless Steel?
It is common to add alloys onto steel to increase the desired properties. For instance, the marine-grade stainlesssteel called Type 316, is resistant to harsh environments.
There are many types of stainless steel 316. The most common are the L, F, , and H variations. They are all slightly different and is utilized for a different purpose. L is a reference to 316L steel having higher carbon content than the 316.
the 316 and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
While they are similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both provide better resistance to corrosion, and are more durable at high temperatures. Additionally, they aren't able to be made harder through heat treatment. They are able to be easily stretched and shaped.
The difference between 316 and Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel has less carbon than 316. Even though it has a lesser carbon contents, 316L is very similar to 316 in nearly every way. The cost is similar, and both are strong and resistant against corrosion, making them the ideal choice for extremely stressful conditions.
For projects that require a lot welds, 316L is a more suitable choice since 316 is more prone to welding corrosion over 316L (corrosion at the seam). However, 316L can be annealed to resist welding attenuation. It is also a suitable stainless steel choice for high temperatures, high corrosion tasks This is why it's so popular in marine and construction projects.
Both 316 and 316L is the cheapest option. The 304 is similar to 304L but the price is much lower. Both are not as durable as the 317 or 317L which are stronger, have more molybdenum in them and better general corrosion resistance.
